One of the devastating things that can happen to a woman as she undergoes menopause is depression. While it is true that, for many menopausal women, there is no valid reason for their depression, they just can’t run away from the effects of the decrease in their hormone levels.
If you are menopausal, and depression is one of the symptoms that you experience, here are some of the things that you can do to rise above it:
Accept. Accept the fact that you are undergoing depression. You cannot face something until you acknowledge that it’s real. Once you recognize the fact that you are, indeed, suffering from depression because of your menopausal, you can find ways to tone down the blues.
Eat Healthy. Many women have attested that they have managed the symptoms of their depression well because they changed their diet, eating more healthy foods. If it works on other symptoms of menopause, eating healthy can help you with your depression, too. Also, it can be a great help if you take Omega 3 fatty acid as a supplement as it can help you stabilize your mood.
Lower your stress. There are some women who become depressed during their menopausal period because of the stress they experience at home and work. Many think they have become incompetent in the workplace because the other symptoms of menopause prevent them from being as productive as they used to be. If you find yourself in the same situation, don’t feel bad about yourself. You can lower your stress and depression if you take lesser responsibilities. Of course, you can’t tell your boss to lower your work load because you are menopausal. However, when you arrive home, you can probably tell your husband and kids to help you in the house chores so that you can have more time to rest.
Exercise. This is one of the best solutions that can help you rise above your depression during your menopausal phase. There is a scientific evidence that exercising can actually help a person feel better if he is depressed, thanks to the happy hormones endorphin and serotonin that are released after you sweat it out. Apart from feeling better emotionally, exercising can help you manage your weight, too.
Allow other people to help you. You may not know it, but there are other people who want to help you get by your depression due to menopause. Don’t shun them. Allow them to help you. This is not to say, though, that you open up about your depression and your problems to anybody who approaches to help you. This simply means that you should not hesitate to vent out your thoughts and sentiments when a trusted person approaches to help you.
Seek medical help. If you feel that, with each passing day, you are sinking more into your depression, you should seek medical help. After all, your depression may not be due to menopause at all and is caused by other things. The only way to confirm this is through the help of a professional.
Depression is a mood disorder that is caused by hormonal imbalance. Unfortunately, because of the hormonal changes that a woman experiences during menopause, she becomes even more susceptible to depression. However, with the tips mentioned above, a menopausal woman can surely manage this mood disorder.
